The Best AI Tools for Busy Writers

Through the rise of AI and the ethical concerns it raises I have avoided it entirely. But, as always, when something becomes mainstream, you can’t escape it. And so, I tried it. I discovered how I could use AI as a tool to help build my writing career without abusing it, and now I see the benefits. That isn’t to say there aren’t still concerns. However, when you use AI as a tool, it can be incredibly helpful—especially to writers trying to grow their online presence. So, I want to share my must-have AI tools for writers and the pros and cons of AI.

Beginner Writers & Authors are One-Man Bands

Aspiring writers and authors often struggle to get their work seen. Becoming an established author takes so much behind-the-scenes work that many underestimate. You are solely responsible for coming up with ideas, writing, editing, marketing, and creating connections. Sometimes it’s even up to you to publish, promote, create cover art, and sell your stories. That’s a lot for one person to do.

What I’ve found is AI can help lessen this load by helping you to create marketing ideas, copywriting, and brainstorming. Of course, AI could do it all, but that kinda defeats the point of being a writer. The most crucial element is finding a balance where AI is simply a tool and you are the captain.

I want to stress this because I think it’s easy to cross that line. I’ve found myself tempted to use AI to finish writing blog posts that I get stuck on. And it’s so easy to find yourself there when the creative block hits. So, if you find yourself relying on AI too much, maybe take a break from it. I never want to use AI to write blog posts, stories, or anything that I as a writer can and should write—even if it’s hard.

With that being said, let’s look at some of the concerns AI has brought.

AI Concerns for Writers

I think the two major concerns when it comes to AI for writers especially are plagiarism and job security.

Plagiarism

AI learns by analyzing the work of people, and that poses a big concern in plagiarism. If AI requires writing written by people to learn, and they have not consented to that, is that ethically moral? I’ve seen many arguments both in agreement and disagreement and I truly do not know the answer.

Job Security

Many people fear for AI taking jobs from people, and while I believe that is possible, I don’t think AI is advanced enough for that yet. AI still fails to provide the originality writers bring and it struggles with the nuances in writing. However, some companies may not care and may still chose AI over paying actual writers. Only time will tell what happens.

Benefits of AI Tools for Writers

Growth

One of the most beneficial aspects of AI for writers is that you can use it to grow your audience. As I previously mentioned, AI can be used to write copy for social media, research trending keywords and tags, and guide you in the business aspects of your writing career.

Brainstorming

Sometimes we as writers run out of ideas—not just story ideas but also social media ideas. Using AI to brainstorm ideas is a great and easy way to get rid of writer’s block.

Best AI Tools for Writers

I have three AI tools I use on a regular basis as a writer. And there are countless other tools that can help you, but I want to share some of the best.

• Grammarly (free): you have probably heard of Grammarly as it is one of the most popular writing tools. I use Grammarly to check my writing for spelling mistakes, grammar issues, and clarity.
• Jasper (paid): I have personally never used Jasper, but I have heard many great things about it. Jasper helps you to write long-form content like blog posts, e-books, and more. Personally, I don’t use AI to write long-form content but if you do, Jasper is the go-to.
• Tailwind (paid): Tailwind is great for automating social media posts and writing social media copy. It allows me to post consistently to Pinterest (also works with Instagram) without spending hours and hours creating pins, writing titles and descriptions, and posting them.
• ChatGPT (free): My personal favorite and absolute must-have is ChatGPT. It’s free to use and can do basically anything. I use it to get ideas for posts, find trending keywords, and create content calendars. This is where you can really use AI to grow your audience.

Delicate Balance

While AI and its future may still be unclear, the benefits it brings to aspiring writers are worth exploring. May we move forward with cautious optimism while continuing our writing careers and discovering new ways to grow.
