What My Creative Writing Days Look Like

I hear the birds chirping outside the window as the warm sunlight pours onto my face. A quick morning routine comes before I turn on the kettle. Another day of writing awaits me.

In today’s post, I’ll share what simple “creative writing days” look like in my life as a writer. I love these restful days where I can work on my own time and spend it doing what inspires me. I am so grateful for being able to enjoy days like this, and I hope you find some inspiration in this.

First Writing Session

I don’t begin writing until the afternoon (I have become a bit of a night owl, and I now enjoy writing later in the day). I used to view this as me being unproductive, but I’ve learned that it’s better to embrace what works for you instead of forcing something that doesn’t. So instead of making myself be “productive” and write first thing in the morning, I do what feels more natural for me and write later in the day. I’m way more productive when I’m writing.

Usually, I’ll start with whatever needs my attention most. This mostly consists of:

  • blog writing
  • social media copywriting
  • email writing
  • newsletter writing

After a few hours, I normally can’t focus well, so I take a lot of breaks between writing sessions. I’ll get some food, take a walk, get outside, play some video games, read—whatever I’m in the mood to do. I also use this time to do the more mundane tasks like running errands, going to appointments, working, etc.

Second Writing Session

After a little while, I’ll get back to writing—this time my focus is more creative. Though sometimes I do end up going back to “work writing”, I like to spend the evenings doing more creative activities. There’s something about the later hours that feels softer with less pressure. I tend to listen to music whenever I’m doing anything creative. For some reason, it gives me so much inspiration—especially when writing my novel!

And, when I need a break from writing, I tend to spend this time working on my art. I don’t force myself to write when I’m not into it because it never turns out well.

Evening Wind Down

Once I’m done writing for the day, I like to spend my time doing whatever I like. Mostly I’ll read, play video games, and spend time with my boyfriend.

I also take time to get a nice workout in—seriously, I’ve been working out regularly now for almost a year, and it’s been such an improvement with my physical and mental health. The trick, I’ve found, is to find something you actually enjoy! If you hate doing something, you’ll never be able to stick to it. Pilates and walking have been my favorite forms of daily exercise.

Important Sidenote

Some days are like this—and I live for those days—but not all are. Some days are stressful, some days I struggle, some days it’s lonely, and some days I question all of my choices. But, the more I work on improving myself and doing my best, the more of these relaxing and peaceful days I have.

Try: Pick one task a day to focus on slowing down or do one thing a day that inspires you.
